Local hearing set for program claimants

12/5/2004

Local claimants to the Energy Employees Occupational Illness program will now have an opportunity to attend a local discussion of a controversial audit of the program's methodology, which many claimants believe has treated them unfairly.

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health agreed to the local hearings, which will be held in addition to the main hearing scheduled later this month in California.

"I'm glad that NIOSH has not only listened to our call to come to Buffalo but has responded with urgency," Schumer said.

The exact date of the Buffalo-area hearing is yet to be determined.
